Soh Wen Ming is a drummer and a graduate of the Berklee College of Music. His association with music started when he was 12 years old in church. Later on he got to hang with many of Singapore’s best jazz musicians such as Jeremy Monteiro, Christy Smith, Eddie Layman, Mei Shuem, Chok Kerong, Andrew Lim and others. He also studied for five years under one of Singapore’s greatest drummers, the late Edmond Branson Jr.
Noted For his versatility, he has also worked with musicians outside of the jazz idiom such as Corrinne May, Fendi and Munir from Fuze Collective, Vanessa Fernandez, Dawn Ho, Alicia Pan and “Jack and Rai”.
Wen Ming is theĀ recipientĀ of both the Berklee World Scholarship Tour Scholarship and the Singapore National Arts Council Overseas Arts Bursary. In 2006 Wen Ming, with financial support from both the Berklee College of Music and the Singapore National Arts Council, began his journey at the Berklee College of Music. In his time there he has studied with great teachers such as Hal Crook, Ed Tomassi, Bob Moses, Jon Hazilla, Ian Froman, Dave Samuels Ralph Peterson and George Garzone.
Since returning to Singapore he has been actively performing at all the noted local nighspots and also performed with the Jeremy Monteiro Trio at APEC 2009, where they performed for 21 world leaders including president Barack Obama. In January 2010, Wen Ming became the new resident drummer at Harry’s at Boat Quay, one of the premier venues for jazz in Singapore. While keeping a busy performing schedule, he also pursues an active teaching practice. Wen Ming currently holds a teaching residency at the Overseas Family School and has a select number of students that he teaches privately. He is also an instructor mentor for the Esplanade’s “Bright Young Things” program, where professional musicians are brought in to mentor promising new talented musicians who might be able to contribute to Singapore’s growing music scene.
